Known for their fast runs and spectacular aerial displays, King Mackerel are among the most sought-after gamefish. Kingfish can grow quite large, reaching a maximum of 6 feet and 100 pounds. Most catches will be in the 20-35” range, and 10 to 20 lbs.

  • Size: 10 to 20 lbs
  • State Record: 79 lbs and 58.50 inches; 2006; bait – ribbonfish. (Source: Texas Parks and Wildlife)
  • Habitat: The King Mackerel is a highly migratory species, occupying a generally pelagic (open water) lifestyle. They prefer to hang out near offshore structures, such as deep ledges, natural reefs, artificial reefs, shipwrecks, oil rigs, or any other type of structure, as this is where the baitfish are. The only exception to this is during the summer, when the fish come close to shore to follow the inward migration of baitfish.
